Amman
| View Map | Amman is the capital city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city was originally built on seven hills, but it now spans an area of over nineteen hills (each known as a jabal or mountain). Because of the cooling effects of its location on a plateau, Amman enjoys a Mediterranean climate and four seasons of excellent weather.
| | Aqaba
| View Map | Aqaba is a coastal town in the far south of Jordan and is the country's only seaport. The town borders Eilat, Israel, with a border post where it is possible to cross between the two countries. Aqaba is well known for its beach resorts and luxury hotels. Another very popular venue is the Turkish Bath (Hamam) built in 306AD, in which locals and visitors alike come to relax after a hot day.
| | Dead Sea
| View Map | This is the lowest section of the earth's crust, being 1200 feet below sea level. It is 60 miles long and 13 miles wide and lies between the present-day Jordan and Judean mountainside of Israel. Its source is the Jordan River. No living organism can survive in these waters since its geological bottom is full of minerals, sulfur, iodine, and potassium. The mud found at its bottom is quite medicinal for skin disorders. Towards the southern end of the sea, pillars of salt begin to emerge from the waters. Not far away from this region lies Sodom and Gomorrah.
| | Petra
| View Map | Petra - meaning cleft in the rock, is an archaeological site lying on the slope of Mount Hor. According to Arab tradition, Petra is the spot where Moses struck a rock with his staff and water came forth, and where Moses' brother, Aaron, is buried - at Mount Hor, known today as Jabal Haroun or Mount Aaron. Petra is renowned for its rock-cut architecture and is also one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
| | Wadi Rum
| View Map | Wadi Rum is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. The area was "discovered" as a climbing area in 1984.
