Tanzania

Located in East Africa, Tanzania is bordered by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique on the south. To the east it borders the Indian Ocean.

Tanzania is Africa at its most wild and unexplored, a land of contrasts and majesty from the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro to the sun-drenched beaches of Zanzibar, from the vast herds of game grazing on the Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater to the beautiful scenery and friendly welcome of its people.  Its natural wealth offers something for everyone.

Arusha
View Map

Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa, a bustling, vibrant town with the streets filled with safari game viewing vehicles crisscrossing the pothole roads. Maasai warriors in full regalia stroll the streets, mingling with tourists in crisp khaki, fresh off the plane from Europe or the United States. If you are flying in on a pre-organized safari, you are unlikely to spend much time in Arusha, as your hosts will whisk you through on the way to one of the great game parks.

Dar es Salaam
View Map

Dar es Salaam (Arabic for “haven of peace), city in eastern Tanzania and the acting capital of the country (the smaller city of Dodoma was designated as the eventual capital of Tanzania). It is the nations largest city, chief seaport, and principal commercial, manufacturing, and educational center. The National Central Library, and the National Museum of Tanzania, with notable collections on eastern African ethnography, archaeology, and its history.

Lake Eyasi
View Map

Tourists hardly know this wild, still nearly unexplored landscape, and you will be particularly impressed of it. Lake Eyasi is a mildly alkaline lake stretching for about 31 miles to the southwest. To the northeast, as far as your eyes can see, the horizon is dominated by the impressive Crater Highlands, to the north the plains of the Serengeti. Small groups of Bushmen - the Hadza and Watindiga, inhabit this area. Who live in groups hunting with bow and arrows and gathering roots, tubers and wild fruits much as humankind lived in the Stone Age.

Lake Manyara National Park
View Map

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most diverse of national parks with a varied ecosystem, rich wildlife, incredible birdlife and spectacular views.  It is a relatively small park but offers a microcosm of the Tanzanian safari experience.  The highlight of the park could well be the thousands of pink-hued flamingoes that stoop and graze along the shores of Lake Manyara.  The park is also well-known for its tree-climbing lions.

Mount Kilimanjaro
View Map

Located in the north-east of Tanzania, close to the border with Kenya, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and the highest free standing mountain in the world.  It attracts thousands of climbers each year trying to conquer its summit and stand on the "Roof of Africa".  The mountain consists of a range of diverse life zones at different altitudes including rainforests, moorlands, alpine meadows and an alpine desert.  The flora and fauna of each region are fascinating.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area
View Map

One of the wonders of the world, it is difficult to give a fair description to the enormity and beauty of the Crater. There is no comparison, if only the Garden of Eden! A steep wall of thick forest surrounds the circumference, which looks like a natural amphitheater 162 square miles in size. An incredible ecosystem consisting of grasslands, swamps, lakes, rivers, woodlands, forests and an arid area of shifting dunes exists here, and thus the crater is able to sustain a vast resident population of game including elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, wildebeest, gazelle, leopard, black rhino, monkeys & hyena.

Olduvai Gorge
View Map

Known as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’, the Olduvai Gorge is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world.  Since its discovery in the 1950s by Louis and Mary Leakey, the site has been instrumental in furthering the understanding of early human evolution where fossil remains of human ancestors have been found from as long as 2.5 million years ago.

Serengeti National Park
View Map

Serengeti is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the most spectacular parks in the world, the Serengeti covers some 5700 square miles including large plains, short grass plains, kopjes, and lakes. The name "Serengeti" is derived from the Maasai language meaning "endless plain". Every year, more than 1 million wildebeest travel in long caravans across the plains of the mighty Serengeti, all in search of better feeding grounds, followed by a large variety of other animals. Other common species fond here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala, baboons, monkeys and a profusion of almost 500 bird species.

Tarangire National Park
View Map

South of Lake Manyara this is a delightful untamed gem of a park! It abounds with game and the numerous wide-bowed baobab trees create a lasting impression. It is finest during the dry seasons of June to October and again from December to March when the Tarangire River and the various swamps attract the highest concentration of game.

Zanzibar
View Map

Once a separate state, Zanzibar is now part of Tanzania but remains a semi-autonomous region.  Stone Town, a World Heritage Site and an old quarter in the capital, is a place of winding lanes, circular towers, carved wooden doors, raised terraces and beautiful mosques.  Important architectural features are the Livingstone House, the Guliani Bridge, and the House of Wonders.  The island was once the world's leading clove producer and was known as the ‘Spice Island’.
