Egypt

Egypt is probably the worlds oldest civilization having emerged from the Nile Valley around 3,100 BC, historically. Egypt is probably one of the oldest vacation spots that early Greeks, Romans ventured for fun, and to see the wonders of humankind’s earliest triumphs. However, Egypt has much more than Pyramids and monuments. It has also Red Sea scuba diving, hot nightspots, luxury hotels and five star restaurants. It has romantic cruises down the Nile on festive riverboats, a night at the grand opera and it is a cultural experience like none you have ever experienced. Egypt is a land bustling with life, sound, visual beauty and excitement.

Breathtaking and impressive monuments of ancient Egyptian civilization continue to draw visitors to Luxor, located 450 miles south of Cairo. Its magnificent temples, tombs and palaces - built from enduring sandstone and granite - border the banks of the Nile River. On the east bank stand the Luxor and Karnak temples, while Queen Hatshepsut's temple lines the west bank of the great river. This Monastery is located at the foot of Mount Sinai, where Moses received the Ten Commandments. It is built around Moses' Burning Bush, which has a chapel built atop it. St. Catherine, who was tortured and beheaded for her Christian beliefs, lends her name to Sinai's center of religious tourism. The Monastery of St. Catherine is one of the best known monasteries in the world. It is a spectacular natural setting for priceless works of art. But of perhaps even greater significance is that it has the second largest collection of illuminated manuscripts after The Vatican.

Temple of Abu Simbel
View Map

The great temple of Abu Simbel is dedicated to the glory of Pharo Ramses II.  The colossi of the king are each 65 feet high, while the facade is more than 114 feet wide and 98 feet high. The central entrance leads into a large hall with massive pillars fronted by Osiris figures of the king. The temples orientation is arranged in such a way that twice every year on 22 February and 22 October the earliest sun-rays shine on the back wall of the innermost chamber, thus illuminating the statues of the four gods seated there.
